Luther Path in Saxony Anhalt
The Luther Path is located between the Luther Towns of Wittenberg, Eisleben and further on to Mansfeld. There are two roads - one goes from Wittenberg to the North, along Dessau and Bernburg; the other goes to the South, along the Düben Heide (Heath) and Halle - to Eisleben and Mansfeld. Along this path connections to other walking paths within Germany or Europe (for example the Jacob Pilgrims Path) can be found.
The Luther Path is 255 miles long. It is marked by the signature letter that Martin Luther used. Besides the tourism offerings, the Luther Path also has the potential for increasing religious and spiritual awareness. In the churches and other spots along the way the impact of Luther can be seen, and there are various spiritual sights and events to experience as well.
Luther 2017 - 500 years of Reformation
Luther’s publishing of the 95 thesis on October 31st, 1517, is considered to be the beginning of the Reformation. Already since the 16th century the church has celebrated Reformation Day on the last day of October. Festivities celebrating the Reformation Jubilee began in 1617. Since that time they have been taking place every 100 years.
The citizens and the church agree that the 500th anniversary should be more than a one-day celebration. This is why a Luther Decade was announced. It will start 500 years after Luther fi rst arrived in Wittenberg in September 2008 and will last until 2017, the 500th jubilee of the publishing of the 95 thesis.
Every year, from 2008 to 2017, important events such as state exhibitions, scholarly conferences, cultural programs, tourism attractions, and school projects will be available to the public. The themes will be related to historical individuals and events as well as to political and cultural developments of the past 500 years - those years that have had their roots in the Reformation.
The most important effect of the Luther Decade will then be accomplished when as many people as possible can speak to each other about Luther and the Reformation on national and international levels. Hopefully, the commemoration of the Reformation Decade will not only look back to the past historical events but will also foster a peaceful and harmonious future.
